Milford Little League 12U softball team dominant in All-Star district showcase

MILFORD, CT -- The Milford Little League Softball Major (12-Under) Division All-Stars easily cleared their first hurdle along a tough tournament trail that rewards only a select few teams with an appearance at the World Series in Greenville, North Carolina.

While the journey leading up to that international showcase each August is long and challenging, reaching the first mile marker is nothing short of a very positive accomplishment.

The Milford girls did just that and in impressive fashion with a convincing 13-0 win over North Haven in the District 4 championship game on Friday evening at Brewster Field.

With the victory, the undefeated All-Stars advance to sectional play in Bristol. Their first game is scheduled for next Friday (June 26) against an opening-round winner from Thursday (June 25).

Milford struck early with three runs in the first inning against North Haven, and then proceeded to put the icing on their district cake with a 10-run second inning.

That was more than enough offensive help for starting pitcher Ali Tworkowski, who struck out eight and issued only one walk during a great performance inside the circle. Avery Caprio took over in the fourth and final inning and put the finishing touches to the shutout effort.

Addy Iannaccone, who handled most of the catching duties for Tworkowski, ripped an RBI single during Milford's first-inning showing that was aided by five bases on balls. Zoe Jaques and Ashlynn Seaberg drew back-to-back run-scoring walks for the 3-0 advantage.

The Brewster girls sent 16 batters to the plate during the decisive second inning.

Milford's scoring spree was highlighted by Eliana Coladarci's blast into right field for a two-run double.

Cayla Doyle and Tworkowski unleashed consecutive singles to get the big scoring inning started. Kaylee Phelan also connected for an RBI hit.

In all, four Milford players -- Molly Maziarz, Phelan, Iannaccone and Seaberg -- scored twice in the win.

Should Milford be successful at sectionals, the squad would advance to state play at the Waterford Little League complex. The state champion from that tournament earns a berth at the nationally televised New England Regional at Breen Field on the campus of the A. Bartlett Giamatti Leadership Training Center in Bristol.
